"Spirituality as Peace Work" - article

Tuesday 5 July 2016

"How do people in a conflict zone deal with violence, with the feeling of powerlessness, guilt, hatred, and pain? What role does religion play in such a situation?"

Annalena Groppe spent some time in the village more than two years ago as part of her research for her BA thesis. Now, she has written an article based on her thesis. She explores the concept of spirituality as it is defined by the persons in the village she interviewed, and how they see this as relating to traditional concepts of religion and to their peace work.

She begins the article by asking, "How do people in a conflict zone deal with violence, with the feeling of powerlessness, guilt, hatred, and pain? What role does religion play in such a situation?".

The article shows how, according to the perspective of the interviewees, religiosity can become a tool for peace.
