Ta’ayush is a grassroots organization in Israel that received recognition for its work in promoting peace and coexistence between Jewish and Arab communities in Israel and Palestine. Founded in 2000, Ta’ayush is a collective of Israelis and Palestinians striving together to end the Israeli occupation and to achieve full civil equality through daily non-violent direct-action.
The name “Ta’ayush” is significant, as it means “living together” in Arabic, reflecting the organization’s core mission of creating a shared space where different communities can collaborate on issues of common concern.
Established in 2000 by a joint network of Palestinians and Israelis to counter the nationalist reactions aroused by the Al-Aqsa Intifada, it is a self-described “a grassroots movement of Arabs and Jews working to break down the walls of racism and segregation by constructing a true Arab-Jewish partnership. Together we strive for a future of equality, justice and peace through concrete, daily, non-violent actions of solidarity to end the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories and to achieve full civil equality for all.”
Ta’ayush’s commitment to nonviolence and its emphasis on grassroots activism have earned it a reputation as a leading voice for peace and justice in the region. Ta’ayush, as a grassroots organization, has played a significant role in protecting lives and promoting human rights, particularly for Palestinians living under occupation. While the group is not a traditional humanitarian organization focused on emergency medical care or direct rescue operations, it has saved lives indirectly through its activism and advocacy efforts.
It saves lives, as well, when providing protection and accompaniment to Palestinian farmers and villagers in the West Bank who are vulnerable to violence from Israeli settlers and the military. Ta’ayush volunteers often place themselves between Palestinian civilians and aggressive settlers or soldiers, effectively acting as human shields to prevent violence and escalation. In these confrontations, the presence of Ta’ayush activists can deter attacks, thereby protecting lives.
Additionally, Ta’ayush has been involved in rebuilding homes and schools that have been demolished by Israeli authorities. By helping to restore basic infrastructure, the organization contributes to the safety and well-being of Palestinian communities, ensuring that they have shelter and access to education, which are essential for survival and stability.
The organization also works to ensure that Palestinian communities have access to water and other essential resources. In areas where water supplies are intentionally cut off or restricted, Ta’ayush’s efforts to restore access are critical to preventing disease and ensuring the survival of those communities.
Why was Ta’ayush chosen to be honored in the Garden of Rescuers? We chose Ta’ayush for its unwavering commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of vulnerable populations. This award places Ta’ayush alongside other esteemed individuals and groups who have made significant contributions to peace and justice, further solidifying its role as a key player in the ongoing efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Ta’ayush’s work continues to be a source of inspiration for many who seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict. By fostering dialogue, providing practical support, especially by creating a model for standing in solidarity with oppressed communities, Ta’ayush embodies the principles of courage, compassion, and cooperation that are essential for building a lasting peace in the region.
