Dr. Alganesc Fesseha

August 14, 2024

Dr. Alganesc Fesseha is a prominent humanitarian and human rights advocate whose work has made a significant impact in the fight against human trafficking, torture and exploitation, particularly among African refugees. Born in Eritrea, Dr. Fesseha’s life has been marked by a deep commitment to social justice, driven by her firsthand understanding of the suffering caused by conflict, poverty, and human rights abuses.

Dr. Fesseha’s work is primarily focused on the Horn of Africa, a region plagued by political instability, armed conflict, and economic hardships. These conditions have forced many people to flee their homes in search of safety and a better life, often making perilous journeys that expose them to extreme dangers. Refugees from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan, and other neighboring countries have become prime targets for human traffickers and smugglers, who exploit their desperation.

In response to this crisis, Dr. Fesseha has dedicated her life to rescuing and protecting these vulnerable individuals, particularly women and children who are at high risk of abuse and exploitation. Through her organization, the Ghandi Charity, based in Italy, she has been instrumental in providing critical assistance to refugees who have been kidnapped, tortured or subjected to sexual violence. Her efforts have not only saved lives but have also brought international attention to the plight of African refugees, many of whom suffer in silence and obscurity.

One of Dr. Fesseha’s most notable achievements is her work in the Sinai Peninsula, a region infamous for the brutal treatment of refugees. Many African refugees trying to reach Israel through Egypt have been captured by traffickers in the Sinai, where they had been held for ransom in horrific conditions. Victims are subjected to torture, sexual abuse and even forced labor, and they were sometimes even killed if their families did pay the demanded ransom.

Dr. Fesseha has played a crucial role in rescuing these victims from captivity. She collaborated with local and international organizations to track down the traffickers, secure the release of captives, and to provide them with medical care, psychological support and safe passage to countries where they can seek asylum. Her work often involves navigating dangerous and complex situations, but her determination to save lives has never wavered.

In addition to her direct interventions, Dr. Fesseha has been a vocal advocate for the rights of refugees and migrants. She has spoken out against the global indifference to the suffering of African refugees and has called for greater international cooperation to combat human trafficking. Her advocacy extends to pushing for policy changes that address the root causes of migration, such as poverty, war, and human rights violations, and for the creation of safe and legal pathways for refugees to seek asylum.

Dr. Fesseha remains deeply humble and focused on her mission. She continues to work on the front lines of one of the world’s most challenging humanitarian crises, driven by a profound sense of responsibility and compassion for those who have been dehumanized and forgotten. Her life’s work stands as a powerful testament to the impact one individual can have in the face of overwhelming odds, and her story serves as an inspiration to all who strive to make the world a more just and humane place.

Why Dr. Alganesc Fesseha was chosen to be honored in the Garden of Rescuers: Her exceptional efforts in combating human trafficking have saved countless lives. The award highlights not only her courage and dedication but also the broader need for more individuals and organizations to step up in the fight against the most horrific atrocities around the globe.
